A neglected classic based on the novel by JL Carr, A Month in the Country is set in rural Yorkshire in about 1920. The film follows Tom Birkin (Colin Firth), a destitute World War I veteran employed to carry out restoration work on a mediaeval mural discovered in a rural church while coming to terms with the after-effects of the war. The escape to the idyllic countryside is cathartic for Birkin, who forms a close relationship with archaeologist James Moon (Kenneth Branagh) who has also been emotionally scarred by his experiences in the war. The film also features music including excerpts from Verdi’s Quattro Pezzi Sacri.
